Going to the Gym with an Ostomy Bag

COVID-19 has put a big change in my life.  For me, it has caused me to be more sedentary in general.  With most things closed, the gyms have been off-limits for months.  To me, this has hurt me in so many ways.  I am not able to work out in a safe place that has the right equipment and I am not really able to put it into a routine at home.  It has made me gain a lot of weight.  Luckily, with 2021 started to debunk all the lies about COVID-19 the gyms are back open and I am able to get back at it.  With that being said, It has certainly been a wild year.  With being stuck inside for months I am feeling a bit larger than normal.  It has been a tough lockdown and the coronavirus has taken its toll on many of our bodies.  Being forced to stay home and work at home has made my movement in general really go down.  The time is finally here that we can all get out and I have decided to get my workout on while the pandemic is slowing.  The case numbers seem to be dropping and most businesses are getting back to work.  I am enjoying the ability to get out and jog and feel good about it again. But having a stoma people always ask how that works.  The fact is I have an ostomy bag and that is not a bad thing.

There is no major change to life except how I get ready in the morning and hit the bathroom up.  I use amazing gear that protects me and keeps me from having to think about my stoma. That’s the key, my gear works and I forget about it.  I have to say that having a stoma and keeping up with my ostomy care is how I workout.  It really is not that big of a deal, it only takes a little preparation.  I get the right ostomy care gear and I don’t have an issue with going for a jog.  Also going at the right time is important and since I know myself well it is not an issue. Hydrating beforehand is key to me and that is what I do.

Working out at home was a waste of time for me. Videos did not help.  Billy Blanks was much more complicated than I would have thought and maybe a little too advanced to start with. So I moved on to simply jogging 3 times a week and I may throw a home video night in once a week later on.  I have found that since I have not been active for more months that my ankle was really giving me some issues.

My body gave out on me before my stoma and gear.  Yes, not my stoma, my ankle which I sprained about 6 months ago still hurts when I am active on it multiple times a week. It takes longer to heal and get back to jogging shape than it ever has before.  I have found myself having to adjust my jogging form in order to keep going. Heal strikes are causing too much pain and I am shifting to a more barefoot forefoot running gate. Get good shoes that work with your body.
